13 April 2024

National Law University (NLU), Jodhpur, and the General Counsels’ Association of India (GCAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce innovative, industry-aligned courses for law students and legal professionals. This collaboration aims to enhance legal education by integrating real-world insights into academic learning, thereby improving students' preparedness for the evolving demands of the legal profession.

The MoU was signed by Professor Harpreet Kaur, Vice-Chancellor of NLU Jodhpur, and Dr. Sanjeev Gemawat, Group General Counsel of Vedanta and founding member of GCAI. Professor Kaur emphasised the importance of hands-on learning and industry exposure in shaping competent legal minds, especially in the age of digital transformation. Dr Gemawat highlighted the diverse roles played by general counsels in the legal landscape and advocated for their recognition at par with practising advocates. Justice H.R. Panwar, former Judge of the Rajasthan High Court, supported this view, underlining that general counsels are officers of the court and should be granted similar legal standing.

The signing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries from the legal fraternity, including legal professionals, advocates, and retired faculty from Jodhpur. Dr Akhil Prasad, another key figure from GCAI and Boeing India’s legal head, spoke about GCAI’s ongoing efforts to partner with institutions across the country to strengthen legal education and professional development. The event was coordinated by faculty members Dr Manoj Kumar Singh and Dr Neeti Mathur, who emphasised the significance of such collaborations in enhancing the university's engagement with the broader legal ecosystem.
